Rob Richerson is an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. In the classroom, Dr. Richerson is known for his interactive approach. He has integrated Stukent courseware and Simternships™ into his teaching methodology, utilizing resources in Marketing Analytics, Marketing Research, Essentials of Social Media, and Marketing Principles. His strategy of flipping the classroom has revolutionized student engagement. By having students work on Simternships during class time, Dr. Richerson can provide individualized attention, offer immediate feedback, and draw direct connections between academic exercises and job-like marketing scenarios.
“It’s incredible that students can walk into an interview and say, ‘I did a [Simternship] where I learned how to make effective social media posts,’ or ‘I got to try out A/B testing in a simulated environment. I saw the data and interpreted it to make informed decisions,'” Dr. Richerson said. “Getting them to look for results and placing them in the mindset they’ll need for that job is the piece [of the Simternship] that really prepares them for the workforce.”
Another of his innovative practices is creating supplemental video tutorials for external software like Excel. This approach allows students to work through complex software and simulation activities at their own pace, while still benefiting from Dr. Richerson’s direct guidance and expertise.
Dr. Richerson emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning and the immediate application of theoretical concepts. By engaging students in practical activities and providing them with tools to navigate real-world scenarios, educators can significantly enrich the learning experience.
