Our March Madness Recap

“The odds of a perfect bracket are estimated to be 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 (9.2 quintillion).”

(March Madness Pools)

No one, on record, has ever filled out a perfect March Madness bracket.  So, if your bracket wasn’t perfect this year, you’re in the same boat as the rest of us.

March Madness is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States. 70 million brackets were expected to be filled out in 2017  with around $10.4 billion in prizes and betting.

This year, Stukent added to those numbers, but on a much smaller scale…

March Madness consists of 64 college basketball teams competing in a single-elimination tournament.

33 of those 64 teams belong to schools that use Stukent (see image on the right). That’s over 50%! That’s pretty neat! This year’s March Madness champion (UNC) was indeed one of our Stukent schools.

We decided to put together a March Madness pool for all of our professors, students, and friends at Stukent across the world.  We had 159 participants and we gave away over $400 in prizes.

We would like to showcase our top finalists: Debika Sihi & Grant Crossley

Debika Sihi

Georgetown, Texas | Southwestern University | Assistant Professor of Business

Deb was our 1st place winner with 48 correct picks and 147 pts.  We asked what her selecting strategy was and she replied, “I love sports, and I watch a lot of basketball. When designing my bracket, I typically look at regular season record, injuries, and past tournament history.”

Deb is one of our professors using the Digital Marketing Essentials textbook and Mimic simulation.

She enjoys “spending time with my family and dogs outdoors, trying new restaurants, and watching HGTV (although I have no skills in this area).” She doesn’t run any side businesses but is a big supporter of Emancipet (“It’s a great organization, and they share great content”).

Grant Crossley

Provo, Utah | Utah Valley University | Marketing Project Manager for doTERRA International

Grant took 3rd in out Stukent pool with 44 correct picks and 137 pts.  “I have a crazy algorithm when it comes to picking my brackets. It usually starts with following my heart. I love college basketball and it stinks being newly married and not having any sports channels. I had no idea what was going on in the sports world this year, which goes to show anyone can win! What I did know was that Zags lost to BYU at the end of the regular season. I figured they’d choke again in the final. The moral of this story is listen to your heart and you can at least get 3rd place.”

Grant is a student at UVU and has used the Digital Marketing Essentials textbook as well.  Both he and his wife love sports and enjoy living in Utah. “Utah is an awesome place because you have the mountains in your back yard and the city in your front yard. So much to do.”

Grant currently helps with the marketing for Level 212 Fitness. “I’d like to give a shout out to Level 212 Fitness which is a fitness app that my best friend created.”
