Jessy Jones
Assistant Professor in the Business Management and Marketing Department

School: Sinclair Community College

Location: Dayton, Ohio

Jessy Jones lives near Dayton, Ohio with her husband, Bil; 12-year-old son, Westley; and poodle, Lexi. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Wright State University in 2009. She has worked in a variety of industries and sectors including higher education, software, and business.

Jessy is currently an assistant professor in the business management and marketing department at Sinclair Community College. She began working at Sinclair in 2012 when she was hired to manage and grow the internship program for the business division of the college. She succeeded in growing the program, expanding opportunities for students and developing relationships with businesses in the community.

After spending a few years in this position, she realized that — in addition to helping students succeed — the marketing and communications projects and responsibilities were the most enjoyable aspects of her role. She also assumed a variety of marketing responsibilities in her positions with professional associations during this time to test the waters.

So, she decided to pursue a master’s degree in marketing and communication at Franklin University and graduated in 2018. Jessy was fortunate to receive the opportunity to transition into a full-time faculty role in the fall of 2018 with the same institution after completing her graduate program.

She now serves as the coordinator for the college’s digital marketing degree, certificate programs, and courses. This includes classes in digital marketing, social media marketing, and digital marketing analytics. She maintains current certifications from Google, Hootsuite, and HubSpot. Jessy and her husband are also in the process of launching a small, part-time business that will enable her to apply the content she teaches in the classroom on a regular basis so her knowledge in the field remains relevant.

We asked Jessy a few questions. Her answers are below.

WHAT STUKENT COURSEWARE HAVE YOU USED?

Digital Marketing: the Mimic Pro simulation

Social Media & Consumer Engagement: the “Essentials of Social Media Marketing” digital textbook and Mimic Social simulation

Digital Marketing Analytics: currently developing the course and integrating the new “Digital Marketing Analytics” digital textbook and Mimic Digital Marketing Analytics simulation

WHAT TEACHING TIPS WOULD YOU SHARE WITH OTHER PROFESSORS?

The students at Sinclair who take my courses are wonderfully diverse — they come from many different backgrounds, are at different stages in their lives, study in different academic programs, and have different career interests and goals. In addition to digital marketing majors, students from many programs take my courses including graphic design, entrepreneurship, real estate, hospitality, communication, and more. Some are fresh out of high school (or still in high school!), while others are already practicing professionals in their fields.

So, it’s important for me to create learning activities that provide each of them with the opportunity to apply course concepts in a way that is valuable and relevant to them personally, academically, and/or professionally. Each of the courses I’ve developed includes activities and assignments that I designed in a way that gives each student flexibility in choosing the brands they study, articles they read, etc. based on their major and career goals. I also invest extra time and effort at the beginning of each term to learn a bit about each of my students’ majors, interests, and career aspirations, so I can tailor the examples and activities in each course section to address the group’s unique dynamic and needs. Student feedback has been very positive so far, so even though these approaches are a bit more work on my end, the payoff for students is well worth it!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND TALENTS?

My husband gave me three houseplants for Christmas in 2017. My determination to keep them alive grew into quite the hobby over the last few years. I now have somewhere between 50-75 houseplants (one of the original three survived). After learning how to keep (most) plants alive, I moved on to learning how to propagate them, which enables me to grow new plants from my current collection that I can share with friends and family. We also purchased a 3D laser printer at the beginning of this year, so my newest hobbies include practicing my Adobe Illustrator skills and learning how to use the laser to design and create things — most of which support my houseplant hobby!

Thank you, Jessy, and congratulations!
