Dr. Wang has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to research and teaching. He has been the recipient of multiple awards, including two-time Goodman’s Departmental Researcher of the Year Award (2015, 2018), the AxcessCapon Teaching Innovation Award (2018), the Pearson Prentice Hall’s Solomon-Marshall-Stuart Award for Innovative Excellence in Marketing Education (2020), and the 2020 recipient of the Brock University Award for Distinguished Teaching. In addition, he is currently an editorial board member of the “Journal of Service Theory and Practice” and “Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.”

Since 2011, Dr. Wang has been actively integrating experiential education into all the undergraduate and graduate level courses he teaches. His students have completed service-learning projects with more than 70 local organizations. One of the many positive outcomes of these projects is that several companies subsequently offered jobs to students.

Dr. Wang recently received a grant to help digitalize and promote local businesses and organizations for the Canada Summer Games 2021 (which were postponed until 2022 due to COVID-19). Dr. Wang also has been training students on the Brock Junior Consulting Team to help local companies overcome some of the challenges of COVID-19 by providing social media marketing assistance.

We asked Kai-Yu a few questions. His answers are below.

WHAT STUKENT COURSEWARE HAVE YOU USED?

I have used the “Digital Marketing Essentials” e-textbook and the Mimic Pro simulation in both my undergraduate and MBA classes since the course was offered in 2016.

WHAT TEACHING TIPS WOULD YOU SHARE WITH OTHER PROFESSORS?

I developed a partnership program that prepares students to run search engine marketing (SEM) and social media marketing campaigns for local organizations. This program gives students unique experiences that most of them would not normally have during university. They learn to manage a budget and monitor the real time performance of the implemented campaign.

In addition to the students gaining experiential learning by partnering with local organizations, this program enhances the university’s community involvement and brings significant benefits to local businesses. It helps business educators provide an experiential, practical, and impactful project opportunity to all three stakeholders involved (i.e., the university, the students, and the community partners).

For those who are interested in learning more about this program, my teaching notes are available at the 2018 MMA proceedings.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND TALENTS?

I enjoy spending time with my family (e.g., traveling, hiking, and playing tennis). I also enjoy playing basketball, running, and, since the COVID-19 lockdown started, have returned to an old hobby of writing calligraphy.
