Professor of the Month: Susan Mann

Susan Mann, Ph.D. is a professor of marketing and chair of the marketing department at the University of Northwestern Ohio. She also serves as advisor for the UNOH American Marketing Association Collegiate Chapter, which ranks in the top 40 of 350 chapters. During her time at UNOH, she has integrated social media into the curriculum and built relationships with local businesses. The marketing program has tripled in size since she started in 2012. The department works hard to keep current with trends in the field so students can become skilled marketers.

Mann received her undergraduate degrees from Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia. She double majored in secondary education and English, with a business administration minor. She received her master’s degree in Business and Human Development and Training from Webster University in Denver, CO and her MBA from Webster University online a few years later. She earned her Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Trident University online.

We asked Professor Mann a few questions. Her answers are below:

WHAT STUKENT COURSEWARE HAVE YOU USED?

I began using Stukent materials in the Fall of 2015 in my internet marketing class. At that time, the textbook was called “Internet Marketing Essentials” and the simulation was called “The Real Deal.” Now I’m using “Essentials of Social Media Marketing” and Mimic Social. This past year I started using “Market Research Essentials” for my senior level market research class as well.

WHAT TEACHING TIPS WOULD YOU SHARE WITH OTHER PROFESSORS?

I use experiential learning in these two classes. The students have extensive projects, which they work on as they progress through the Stukent materials. When I can, I use small businesses in the area that need assistance with social media. In the past, students were able to work with ARCA-owned race tracks in Michigan and Ohio, Bellacino’s, an event venue, local real estate agent—residential and commercial, and others. I have also brought in speakers (alumni) from our two major social media marketing and relationship marketing firms. These speakers are able to explain in depth about specific topics that are used in their firms. Examples this fall included Facebook Pixel.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND TALENTS?

My hobbies include visiting my children and grandchildren out of state, spending time with my family that live close by, and enjoying our weekends in our camper. Finally, I enjoy cheering on my students.
