Sarah also volunteers for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention ND Chapter and serves as their social media ambassador, managing the Instagram and Facebook accounts as part of their ongoing suicide prevention efforts across the state.

We asked Sarah a few questions. Her answers are below.

WHAT STUKENT COURSEWARE HAVE YOU USED?

For Introduction to Social Media Marketing, I use Essentials of Social Media Marketing” e-textbook, as well as the Mimic Social Simulation.

I also use “Business Writing: A Content Marketing Approach” for my content marketing course and “Mobile Marketing Essentials for my email and MMS marketing course

WHAT TEACHING TIPS WOULD YOU SHARE WITH OTHER PROFESSORS?

Instead of traditional lectures, I record and post weekly quick-shot lessons. The pandemic has really shifted my students’ work schedules and circumstances, and I’ve found they prefer multiple short lessons than an hour-long lecture.

I also put myself in relatable settings, like my kitchen or dining room (versus my office) and incorporate my pets for occasional cameos. Letting my students see me as a “real” person helps break down the invisible online wall that can happen between students and teachers and has increased overall engagement for me.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND TALENTS?

Sarah Dixon-Hackey with her husband

Something most people don’t know about me is that I double-majored in music performance and business. My primary instrument was the cello, and in my twenties, I performed in a backup orchestra for Ray Charles.
