October Marketing News You Can Use

INTERN ‘PRETENDING’ TO WORK CREATES MAJOR CONTROVERSY

Key Point: A TikTok video of an intern “pretending to work” as a marketing strategist (because she hadn’t been assigned sufficient duties) has officially “gone viral.” The post has so far drawn over a million views and a ton of comments. It also opened up a vibrant discussion about what to do when you have no present tasks assigned to you.

Some commenters sympathized, saying they are or have been in the same shoes. Others encouraged her (leciakeys21) to be proactive and find something productive to focus on. But the real surprise in this article is the reference to a Zippia study revealing that only seven percent of employees say they are “productive” at work. The average productive time per day, says Zippia) is two hours and 53 minutes.

Wow. If that doesn’t prompt us all to take a close look at how we’re utilizing time — one of our most precious resources — we’re asleep at the switch.

ELON MUSK TO ‘RESURRECT’ TWITTER

Key Point: It appears that Elon Musk’s bid to purchase Twitter will go through at the agreed-upon price — about $44 billion.

In typical Musk fashion, though, that announcement prompted a cryptic tweet from the iconic Elon: “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.”

What is “X” and will it compete with everything from Facebook to TicToc? In response to questions about why he didn’t just start X from scratch, Musk tweeted “Twitter probably accelerates X by 3 to 5 years, but I could be wrong.”

What is coming next from Elon Musk and Twitter? That remains to be seen, but you can get the rest of the story here.

HOW YOUTUBE REALLY WORKS

Key Point: Mark Bergen, a tech reporter for Bloomberg, recently published a book aimed at demystifying YouTube: “Like, Comment, Subscribe: Inside YouTube’s Chaotic Rise to World Domination.” To help spread the word, Bergen accepted an offer from Nilay Patel to guest on Patel’s podcast, Decoder — and The Verge posted an article with both the audio and the transcript.

Here’s one of Bergen’s comments:

YouTube has never really turned that into a product set or a feature by having any sort of direction or intentional strategy. You can’t really say, “They are really trying to make this an educational platform!” They could. There is plenty of very high-quality educational material on YouTube. I think that’s a total one of their many blown opportunities there, but for a variety of reasons they didn’t pursue that path.

You won’t get many YouTube tips and tricks when you read or listen to the interview, but you’re sure to gain insight about what goes on behind the scenes.
