August 2017 News You Can Use

Google says the search app on mobile will begin including a feed that provides personalized links on the topics you care about most.

And what’s that feed going to be called?

“Google Feed” of course!

Some say it sounds and looks a lot like the Facebook Feed, but Google says there’s a HUGE difference. The Google Feed will provide info about what YOU care about, not what your friends care about.

Will the Google Feed also serve up ads? Not yet, but you can pretty well count on it happening if the pilot is a success. Right? If being alive during these incredible times doesn’t get you pumped up about the possibilities, then you should definitely check your pulse.

Amazon just sold over a billion dollars of products and services in ONE DAY, there’s a movie out about SEO, and internet users are producing about 2.5 quintillion bytes (that’s 10 followed by 18 zeroes) of data every day.

And you thought August was boring?

Wake up and read the news. These are exciting days. Don’t miss them. Seize the opportunity and join the fun.

1.  FACEBOOK TO THE RESCUE

Topic: Social Media Marketing

Key Point: According to Facebook’s head of new partnerships, you may soon be able to escape the onslaught of fake news and get the straight scoop (via Facebook-chosen reputable publishers) this fall. Plans are to allow users to view up to 10 articles each month without cost, then be prompted to subscribe at article #11.

It’s a move that can not only bring in more revenues but also repair the damage between Facebook and publishers who see the giant as more competition for an already pinched market for reader eyeballs and advertiser dollars.

Here’s how TechCrunch handled the story: A Facebook News Firewall.

2. AMAZON PRIME DAY 2017: A RECORD-BREAKING EVENT

Topic: Ecommerce

Key Point: Amazon reports a 60% increase in this year’s Amazon Prime Day sales over prior year sales. Bloomberg set the figure at about $1 Billion revenue for the ONE DAY. Last year’s increase over prior year was about the same percentage, with estimates then at over one-half billion dollars.

That makes Prime Day 2017 Amazon’s biggest day of sales ever – even bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The selling frenzy bodes well for future business too. Amazon reported “an influx of new Prime members” during the event.

3. TWITTER IS TESTING SUBSCRIPTION ADS

Topic: Online Advertising

Key Point: Aimed at smaller advertisers, here’s how it works: Advertisers pay $99 per month for the subscription. In return, Twitter will “automatically amplify your Tweets and profile” during the month. Marketing Land says the program is who might welcome turning over their promotion reigns to Twitter. Critics say that’s the downside as well. Advertisers give up a considerable amount of control over who gets to see the ads.

4. SEO: THE MOVIE

Topics: SEO

Key Point: If you’ve yet to see the Ignite Visibility movie on the “real story of search engine optimization,” do it while the tickets are free. Calling on SEO pundits like Rand Fishkin, Jill Whalen, and Barry Schwartz, this film not only rehashes the turmoil created by Penguin and Panda but looks ahead to the future of SEO.

Get some popcorn and grab a seat. Runtime is about 41 minutes: Watch the SEO Movie.

5. DATA NEVER SLEEPS

Topics: Analytics

Key Point: Have you ever wondered how much digital data is being created every single minute of the day (and night)? Did you know that 90% of all the digital data that exists was created over the past two years? And has anyone ever pointed out that the number of internet users has swollen by over a billion souls in the past five years?

It’s amazing but true. Get all the facts from the Data Never Sleeps 5.0 infographic.

6. GOOGLE MY BUSINESS

Topic: Ecommerce

Key Point: Every SEO practitioner knows the importance of linking business websites to Google+ and then to Google My Business listings. But, did you know it’s now possible for prospects to message you directly from your Google Search business listing? We’re not talking about PPC, but the box that shows up organically.

What does it cost to enroll? Not a dime. Should you do it? Here’s how: Turn On Messaging.

7. ARE TOUGHER STANDARDS COMING FOR AD VIEWABILITY?

Topic: Online Advertising

Key Point: How should advertisers determine whether or not your ad should be charged for a digital “view”? Must every pixel of the ad get shown to a visitor, or is it sufficient for half the ad to appear before the visitor leaves? That topic is a huge point of contention in advertising circles, and there’s more to the argument than you might think.

Read all about it in this AdAge article: Does That View Count?
