How the Competition Works

The Stukent + DECA Social Media Marketing Challenge is your chance to compete against other marketing students across the country. You’ll compete using the social media marketing simulation Mimic Social, where you’ll be tasked with managing a fictitious bag company’s $5,000 weekly social media ad budget. Ad dollars will be put toward marketing on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest.


Mimic Social teaches students content scheduling, audience targeting, and promotion, as well as how to work with influencers to drive product sales.


Only one account is allowed per participant. Students who create a second account or work as part of a team will be automatically disqualified from the competition.


1st Place: $1,500 Cash Prize

2nd Place: $1,000 Cash Prize

3rd Place: $500 Cash Prize

Q: Can my DECA students still participate in this challenge even if I’m using the full (paid) version of Mimic Social in my class(es)?

A: Of course! This limited (free) version of the simulation only has 6 rounds enabled and is a great way to either prep your students or help them review what they’ve learned.

Q: Does it cost anything to register for the challenge?

A: No, competing in this challenge is completely free!

Q: Do I need to purchase the full version of Mimic Social to register for the challenge?

A: No purchase is required to compete in this challenge.

Q: What if my school is not included on the registration form list?

A: If you’re having trouble finding your school on the registration form, please email Karly Farley at [email protected] with the following information:
  • Full name of your school
  • City, state, and zip code in which your school is located
  • Associated school district

Karly will manually resolve the issue so that you and/ or your students can register as soon as possible.

What Social Media Marketing Principles Will Your Students Learn?

Write Targeted Social Media Ads


You’ll learn and test different promotional strategies to create compelling social media ads across various social media network platforms. You’ll also gain experience in writing ad copy that increases engagement and conversions.

Perform Demographic Targeting


You’ll analyze which types of content on which platforms resonate better amongst different demographics.

Learn Social Media Content Promotion Strategies


You’ll learn the difference between earned, owned, and paid social media marketing promotion strategies. You’ll also analyze various forms of media and different targeting strategies to achieve the greatest reach.

Identify and Measure Key Performance Indicators


Knowing which indicators to measure and improve can make or break your social media marketing efforts. The Mimic Social Simulation will help you learn both what key performance indicators (KPIs) are and how to improve them.

Manage an Ad Budget


You’ll learn how to manage a social media marketing budget, including placing competitive bids to drive clicks, shares, likes, comments, etc.

Practice Content Scheduling


You’ll learn the art of content scheduling and analyze data points so you can schedule posts to go live at optimal times.

You need to test all types of posts, times, and platforms, and be prepared to mess somethings up and waste some money on posts that don’t end up working. However, once you notice what failed you and what benefited you, you need to take what benefited you and run with it.
