Bio: Dr. Karen Sutherland is an award-winning social media and public relations educator, researcher, and consultant at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in Queensland, Australia. Karen has more than 20 years of industry experience in marketing, public relations, and communication roles. She previously worked for ABCTV, Fremantle Media, and Monash University. She currently coordinates USC’s Bachelor of Communication (social media). Karen connects social media students to business owners from the Sunshine Coast community who seek social media support, and delivers social media workshops and coaching sessions to clients in Australia and overseas. Her first coauthored book, “Public Relations and Strategic Communication” was released in 2019, and she is currently writing a book called “Strategic Social Media Management: Marketing, Advertising and PR.”

Bio: Kinda Wilson is a marketing instructor at the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. Her marketing and business experience ranges from working with corporations and nonprofits to founding three start-up companies, one of which was named a Top Ten Innovative Startup Company in Oklahoma. Kinda is passionate about bringing business and marketing concepts to life for her students and was awarded the 2017 Excellence in Teaching/Training award by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA). Kinda is also coauthor of the Stukent textbook “Modern Marketing Principles” and TEDx speaker.

Stacy Smollin Schwartz | Rutgers University

Unplugged: Using a Digital Detox to Teach Digital Marketing

Bio: Stacy Smollin Schwartz is an award-winning marketing professor at Rutgers Business School, where she leads a new online Master of Science degree program in digital marketing. As a learning and development consultant to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), she launched the first ANSI-accredited professional certification programs (American National Standards Institute) in the digital media industry. Stacy is a Webby Awards judge with the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and also serves as board vice president and marketing chairperson at Sharsheret. She earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA with Highest Honors in Advertising from Penn State University.

Bio: Lydia Chen Shah is a marketing professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she teaches multiple courses including digital marketing, consumer behavior, social innovation, entrepreneurship, and international marketing. She is part of Western Region Campus Compact’s inaugural 2019–2020 Engaged Scholars Initiative, a cohort of community engagement professionals advancing models of institutional change and collaborative action addressing societal issues. Lydia is a leader in strategy, integrated marketing, and brand and product management. In addition to her dedication to education, she is a consultant with over 20 years of industry experience from startups to Fortune 500 organizations.

Bio: Dr. Karen Freberg is an associate professor in strategic communications at the University of Louisville, where she teaches, researches, and consults in social media strategy, public relations, and crisis communication. Karen has written several books, including “The Roadmap in Teaching Social Media,” “Digital Media Writing for Strategic Communication,” and “Social media for strategic communications: Creative strategies and research based applications.” Karen has consulted, coordinated, and advised various companies in the areas of social media pedagogy and certification programs, such as Cannes Lions, Adobe, Facebook Blueprint, HubSpot, and more.
